Colours, imagination and ancient symbols: in the heart of Oaxaca, the renowned Jacobo & María Ángeles Workshop opens its doors exclusively for you. This is where the world-famous Alebrijes are created – vibrant wooden figures representing Tonas and Nahuales. What was once an endangered tradition is kept alive here in its highest artistic form.
You don’t just witness how simple copal wood is transformed into true works of art – you also step into the philosophy of community spirit that has shaped the workshop since 1994. Each piece tells a story from Mesoamerican mythology, brought to life with contemporary creativity. Many of these artworks now grace international museums and private collections – and you have the chance to see them being created in real time.
An experience that goes far beyond souvenirs: it is an encounter with a living cultural heritage of Mexico.

+2
The tradition of Alebrijes reaches deep into the Indigenous symbolism of Mexico. Originally created as dreamlike spirit figures, they are now recognised worldwide as icons of Mexican folk art.
The Jacobo & María Ángeles Workshop in San Martín Tilcajete (Oaxaca), founded in 1994, has brought this craft to new heights. Through sustainable wood cultivation, local employment and strong community involvement, the workshop weaves together artistry, ecology and culture in a truly exceptional way.
Today, their pieces are far more than handcrafted objects – they are internationally acclaimed works of art, exhibited at the United Nations, in Mexico’s major museums and in renowned collections around the world.
