Piedra Colorada is a slightly hidden spot on the coast near Montezuma, on the southern tip of the Nicoya Peninsula. Its name means “colourful stone” – and indeed, the variety of shades and shapes here is striking. The stones in the riverbed invite you to build, balance and marvel, though a small sign gently reminds visitors: “Please do not take anything – the stones belong to this place.”

The area is protected, yet open to walkers. What makes it special is the blend of calm energy, family-friendly surroundings and natural beauty. For many travellers, this simple picnic becomes one of the quiet highlights of their Costa Rica journey.
